Bringing PEC Perspectives into Paediatric Medical Device Innovation
As part of the TEDDY General Assembly and Scientific Meeting 2026, taking place on 18 – 20 September 2026 at University of Bari, Italy, Piazza Cesare Battisti, 1, 70121 Bari BA. TEDDY will host a dedicated OrphaDev4Kids Patient Expert Committee (PEC) parallel session on 19 September 2026, from 11:30 to 13:00 at BaLab Room, focusing on the evaluation of innovative medical device projects for paediatric and orphan conditions.
OrphaDev4Kids project (EU4H-2023-PJ, Grant Agreement No. 101161377), is a European Union co-funded initiative running from 2024 to 2027 and coordinated by the European Paediatric Transnational Research Infrastructure (EPTRI). The project aims to address critical unmet needs in the field of orphan medical devices for paediatric patients through multidisciplinary research and innovation across Europe. TEDDY Network contributes to the project through its expertise in ethical and legal aspects and through the establishment and coordination of a dedicated Patient Expert Committee, bringing together young participants from TEDDY KIDS Network that include Young Persons Advisory Groups across Europe. The session, “Evaluation of Paediatric and Orphan Medical Devices Innovative Projects with Experts and PEC Members,” is linked to WP2 – Service Access and Tools Management of the Medical Devices Platform, which manages access to and delivery of services requested through the EPTRI Medical Devices Platform. Following the submission and feasibility assessment of service requests, dedicated experts are involved to support the development of innovative paediatric and orphan medical device projects. During the session, the PEC will review OrphaDev4Kids service requests received with the aim to provide feedback on the proposed medical device solutions from the patient perspective, considering aspects such as clinical relevance, feasibility, accessibility, usability, and acceptability. The discussion will also provide an opportunity to identify patients’ needs, expectations, and potential challenges that may not be fully captured through technical or clinical assessment alone.
By bringing young patient experts directly into the evaluation process, the session will highlight how meaningful patient involvement can contribute to the development of more relevant, accessible, and patient-centred medical device solutions for children and young people living with rare and paediatric conditions.
