World Patient Safety Day 2025

Sep 17 2025

Safe Care for Every Newborn and Every Child

Every year on September 17th, World Patient Safety Day is celebrated, a global initiative promoted by the World Health Organization (WHO) and established in Italy through the Directive from the President of the Council of Ministers on April 4th, 2019, proposed by the Minister of Health. This day aims to raise awareness of a crucial topic: the safety of care and patient protection, focusing on preventing avoidable harm in healthcare systems.

2025 Theme: “Safe care for every newborn and child”
This year, the WHO has chosen the theme “Safe care for every newborn and child” along with the slogan “Patient safety from the start!”. It highlights the protection of the most vulnerable—newborns and children—who need safe care, especially in the first years of life, considering their specific needs related to age, weight, health conditions, and social context.

TEDDY efforts focus on integrating pediatric health research into both national and international frameworks, safeguarding children’s fundamental rights, such as:

  • Equal access to healthcare
  • Proper education on medicines
  • Involvement in clinical research decisions

At TEDDY, we advocate for children’s rights in healthcare, strive to provide equal access to treatments, and empower children and young patients to be active participants in their healthcare decisions. Through our advocacy, we work towards building a world where every child has access to safe, effective, and high-quality healthcare from the very beginning.

Key Objectives of the Day:

  • Raise global awareness of safety risks in pediatric and neonatal care across all healthcare settings.
  • Encourage governments and organizations to implement sustainable strategies that ensure safe care for newborns and children.
  • Involve parents and caregivers in promoting patient safety, fostering education and active participation.
  • Promote research on patient safety in pediatric and neonatal care.

The main event in Italy will be the 7th National Patient Safety Day, which will take place on September 17th at the “Cosimo Piccinno” Auditorium in Rome. The event will feature experts, institutions, and representatives from the Regions, discussing necessary measures to ensure safe care for newborns and children.
